A city you read through three places

San Francisco is small enough to cross in an afternoon and varied enough that each district feels like a different city. This route holds the three places that together explain it: the Golden Gate Bridge, where the Pacific meets the bay and the city announces itself; the northern waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf, still a working harbour under the souvenir stalls, with the bay and its islands laid out beyond the piers; and Union Square, the granite plaza downtown where the cable car lines, the theatres and the shopping streets all converge. The order is not fixed and the route is walked, driven or combined with the bay's other landmarks depending on the day.
