Texas · United States

A city where world-class art campuses sit beside America's working spaceflight program.

Houston holds the encyclopedic Museum of Fine Arts, the contemplative Rothko Chapel and the intimate Menil Collection within its Museum District, alongside Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center.

DISCOVER HOUSTON

A city holding a serious art district and America's spaceflight story side by side.

Houston's Museum District centers on the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, one of the largest encyclopedic art museums in the United States, its collection spanning ancient to contemporary work across several connected buildings — general admission is free on Thursdays and for visitors 18 and under. A short distance away, the Rothko Chapel offers a different register entirely: a non-denominational chapel built around fourteen site-specific Mark Rothko paintings, functioning as a quiet, working sacred space as much as an art site, and asking visitors for a respectful, low-noise presence inside. The Menil Collection completes this cluster with an intimate, naturally lit campus built around the collection of John and Dominique de Menil, spanning antiquities, Surrealism and modern and contemporary art; the main building and satellite spaces close Mondays and Tuesdays. Houston's other major identity is entirely distinct: Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, covering the history and ongoing work of American human spaceflight, with an included tram tour to the working NASA campus, including Mission Control, that can sell out on busy days — a four-to-six-hour visit for those who want the full experience, with deeper access tours available as a separate ticketed add-on. Houston's civic calendar adds its own signature week each March, when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo brings a major PRCA rodeo, concurrent headline concerts and livestock competitions to NRG Park — the organizer has confirmed the 95th edition for March 2–21, 2027.

Art Campuses And America's Spaceflight Story

Museum District · Rothko Chapel · Space Center Houston

Houston holds a serious art district and America's working spaceflight program side by side, neither one reducing the other.

The Museum of Fine Arts, the Rothko Chapel and the Menil Collection form one of the country's most distinctive museum clusters, while Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, gives the city an entirely separate identity rooted in human spaceflight rather than a single theme-park-style attraction.

Journey Possibility

Spend a morning in Houston's Museum District at the Museum of Fine Arts and a contemplative stop at the Rothko Chapel, continue to the intimate Menil Collection nearby, and set aside a separate half day for Space Center Houston's tram tour of NASA's working Johnson Space Center campus.
