Reno is the urban anchor: the Truckee River runs through its centre, the arts district and museums sit within walking distance of it, and the calendar carries festivals and events through most of the year. Gaming is part of the city's history and still part of its present, but it is no longer the whole story — the dining, galleries and river frontage now carry as much of the character. Sparks sits immediately east and belongs to the same destination, sharing the valley floor and the everyday life of the metropolitan area. The setting is high desert at over 1,300 metres, with the Sierra Nevada rising on the western edge, which puts mountain air, alpine roads and Lake Tahoe within easy reach of a stay based here.

Reno sits on the Truckee River at the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada, with its arts district, museums and dining concentrated near the water and Sparks extending the same metropolitan area east across the valley. The altitude and desert air shape the light, and the range on the western horizon keeps the outdoors within reach of an ordinary afternoon.
