The Golden Gate Bridge has two sides, and the north one is a different landscape entirely.
Marin County begins at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge and turns quickly into redwood canyons, coastal headlands and small bayfront towns — old-growth forest and open coastline within a half-hour of downtown San Francisco.
DISCOVER SAUSALITO
A redwood-and-headland landscape that starts at the bridge, not after it.
The change in landscape crossing the Golden Gate Bridge northbound is immediate. Battery Spencer, a decommissioned 1897 coastal gun emplacement on the Marin headlands, sits a few minutes' drive above the bridge's north end and gives the single best free view back at it — the bridge, the bay and the San Francisco skyline all in one frame, with none of the crowding of the bridge itself. A short distance further, Muir Woods National Monument protects a stand of old-growth coast redwoods, some over a thousand years old, inside a canyon cool enough to feel like a different climate than the coastline just outside it; the National Park Service requires a parking or shuttle reservation for every visit, year-round, which keeps the grove from being overwhelmed. Beyond the immediate headlands, Marin's bayfront towns — Sausalito's harbor, Mill Valley's redwood-canyon setting, Tiburon's waterfront — read as small, distinct communities rather than suburbs, and the North Bay continues further out to Stinson Beach and Point Reyes Station, where the landscape turns to open Pacific coastline. Marin is close enough to San Francisco to visit in half a day, but the redwoods, headlands and coastline are a genuinely different geography, not an extension of the city across the bridge.

North Of The Bridge
Muir Woods · Marin Headlands · Bayfront Towns
The landscape changes before the bridge traffic even clears.
The Marin Headlands rise directly above the Golden Gate Bridge's north end, with Battery Spencer's clifftop view and the old-growth redwoods of Muir Woods both within a few minutes of the crossing.
Journey Possibility
Stop at Battery Spencer for the bridge view immediately after crossing, continue to Muir Woods with a reserved parking or shuttle slot, and finish along the bayfront through Sausalito or Mill Valley.
